Okay... that's a bit drama... BUT if for some reason you were unavailable, could your team find everything they needed without you?

You can use Teams, SharePoint, Google Drive… whatever works for your team.

Just create one ✨source of truth✨

Why? Because the file named:

"Annual_Report_Final_Version_7_USE_THIS_ONE..."

that's saved on your desktop isn’t a file-management system.

It’s a cry for help...

Your deadline cannot be the actual deadline...

Then Friday comes, and you're waiting on submissions, photos weren't PA approved, and leadership wants to change "just one more thing. It won't take long right?"

👏 BUILD. IN. THE. BUFFER. 👏

Set your internal submission deadline before your "no-crap" deadline.

Give yourself room for late submissions, rewrites, missing information, approvals and all the little things that somehow always show up at the end.

Your future self will thank you.

And this weekend we put in some WORK on our new house.

One of my favorite things about renovating an old house is uncovering the work of the people who came before us.

Every layer gives you a little glimpse of what someone loved, changed, or added to their home.

You also find the things someone did halfway... and now you get to fix them (love that journey for us). 🫠

However, it’s a good reminder that the way you work matters... even after you’re done with it.

I’m also a firm believer that a house rewards the work you put into it.

Making it ours, one layer of flooring at a time (so far, the record is 3 layers). 🩷

Somehow I survived.

For four years, I co-directed Vacation Bible School at my church, and this was hands down one of the most rewarding experiences to be a part of.

Every year, we basically transformed the entire church into a new world.

From a rainforest, to the mountains, to under the sea... we've done it all.

I loved it.

Decorations may seem like one of the least important parts of VBS, but to me, they were part of the message.

When a kid walked through the doors and suddenly they're not just at church anymore.

They're somewhere completely different.

It helped bring everything they're about to learn to life.

It gave them a chance to experience God in a whole new way.

That's what I loved most about it. Creating the full experience and getting to use my creativity to further God's Kingdom and minister to kids.

I still have memories from when I was a kid at VBS, and I wanted to pass that on.

Last year was my final year co-directing, and I'm going to miss it 💛

But who knows... Never say Never when it comes to God.

I’m Shania, like Shania Twain (let’s go girls, am I right?).

I’m the founder of Mustard Seed Marketing, and I really love taking complicated information and making it make sense.

I’ve spent the last 8+ years working in government and defense communications, which means I’ve seen my fair share of complicated information, technical jargon, PowerPoints with WAY too much text and documents that desperately needed a little love.

And weirdly enough... I love it.

I love taking all of that information and figuring out how to make it clear, make it look good and, most importantly, make people actually care about what they’re reading.

That’s a big part of why I started Mustard Seed Marketing.

These days, you’ll find me talking a lot about annual reports, visual communication, branding, presentations and why government communication does NOT have to be black, white and Times New Roman. 😂

The numbers exist.
The mission moved forward.

I didn't name my business Mustard Seed Marketing because it sounded cute.

Matthew 17:20.

Faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains.

When I started Mustard Seed Marketing, I didn't know exactly where it would lead.

And, to be honest, I still don't.

But that's kind of the point.

Plant the seed. Do the work.

Have faith in what God can grow from it.

Two things can be true at the same time.

And honestly, I’m kind of here for it.

Organizations spend an ENTIRE YEAR doing important work.

The report that captures it should feel just as important.

It should tell the story.
Show the progress.
And actually reflect the impact behind the work.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still doing all the other things I love like branding, presentations, strategic communications, visual storytelling, etc.

Annual reports are just getting a little more main character energy around here. 💅🏻

A few weeks ago, I posted my first EVER talking video on LinkedIn.

Now...

I think I want to become a keynote speaker. Casual right?

I recently attended Jess Ekstrom's Mic Drop Workshop, and it completely changed the way I think about sharing ideas.

One thing that really stuck with me:

The world has plenty of brilliant women with ideas worth sharing. It just needs more of us willing to share them.

I've spent years helping organizations communicate complex ideas through strategy, storytelling, and design.

Public speaking doesn't feel like a pivot.

It feels like an extension of the work I already love.

If I can help one organization tell a better story through design, maybe I can help an entire room think differently about communication.

So here's to another scary "yes."

I'm still designing.

I'm still building Mustard Seed Marketing.

I'm just adding a microphone. 🎤

Stick around. I have a feeling this is just the beginning.

“Design is the wrapper. Clarity is the work.”

A great design might get someone to stop scrolling.

But clarity is what helps them understand, trust, and take action.

The strategy, the thinking, and the problem-solving behind the design are what make it effective.

I don’t want my kids to inherit my business.

I want them to inherit my courage.

Courage to take the first step.
Courage to leap without a full back up plan.
Courage to follow a calling.

Building Mustard Seed Marketing wasn’t just a career decision.

It was a decision to show my children that it’s okay to pursue something you believe in—even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

I don’t know if they’ll ever inherit my business.

But I hope they inherit the confidence to trust God, take risks, and build a life they’re proud of.

That’s the legacy I’m chasing. 🌱🩷

Government communication is boring…
Or…. Have we just accepted boring as the standard?

Somewhere along the way, we started confusing:

Professional 🟰 forgettable
Technical 🟰 overcomplicated
Official 🟰 lifeless

I don’t think they have to be the same.

I’ve help communicate everything from assets about patents and technology transfer 👉🏻annual reports and executive briefings.

One thing has become clear:

The people making important decisions are still ✨PEOPLE✨

They appreciate clarity.
They remember stories.

And they’re just as human as the rest of us.

So why are we communicating like they’re robots?

I’m sharing a perspective I’ve believed for a long time:

Government communication deserves better storytelling 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

One of my favorite parts of what I do is seeing the idea come to life. 🌱

I love taking a complex topic and turning it into something people can actually understand and experience!

It starts with strategy. 💡

Then comes the messaging. ✍️

The collaboration. 🤝

The visual storytelling. 🎨

The production. 🖨️

And finally... *insert angel chorus singing* the end product.

There's something incredibly rewarding about walking into an event and seeing months of thinking, planning, and collaboration transformed into a tangible experience.

It never gets old. ✨

Ever noticed how the smartest people sometimes give the hardest presentations to follow?

After sitting through hundreds of presentations, I've noticed one pattern.

The problem usually isn't the speaker.

👉 It's the slide.

Your audience doesn't need to read a paragraph while listening to you explain that same paragraph.

Great presentations support the speaker. They don't replace them.

A few simple shifts can make a big difference:

✅ One idea per slide
🖼️ Use visuals to reinforce your message
📝 Keep the details in your speaker notes
💡 Create moments your audience will remember

Great presentations aren't about making slides prettier.

They're about helping people understand, remember, and act.

Because when your audience understands your message, your message has a chance to make an impact. 🚀

One month into ✨intentionally✨ building Mustard Seed Marketing.

Starting something of your own is exciting.

It’s also quite humbling.

I’ve learned that entrepreneurship is a lot less about having everything figured out and a lot more about being willing to figure things out.

Some lessons so far:

✨ Your experience matters more than you realize. For years, I wondered if the things I was doing were “enough.” Turns out, the years spent learning, creating, and solving problems were preparing me for this exact season.

✨ Building relationships matters. The best opportunities don’t always come from a pitch. They come from conversations, connections, and showing up consistently.

✨ Your perspective is your advantage. There are plenty of talented designers and marketers. But no one has your exact combination of experiences, personality, and approach.

I’m excited for what’s ahead and grateful for everyone who has supported this journey so far.

Here’s to continuing to plant seeds and watching them grow.

HOT TAKE [Work From Home Edition]

I still get dressed for work—even when nobody is watching.

Working remotely has been amazing, but I’ve learned something about myself: how I show up impacts how I work.

Putting on an outfit.
Making coffee.
Sitting down at my desk.
Starting my day intentionally.

It creates a mindset shift.

There’s something about feeling ready to tackle the day that changes your energy.

Remote workers… where do you fall?

👔 Team “dress like you’re going into the office”
☕ Team “business on top, pajamas on bottom”
😂 Team “whatever gets the job done"

Some of the hardest things to communicate are often the things that matter most.

Research.
Technology.
Innovation. Strategy.

The challenge isn’t that the information isn’t valuable.

The challenge is making it understandable.

Great communication doesn’t dumb things down. It creates a bridge between the expert and the audience.

That’s where storytelling comes in.

A strong story helps people understand: → Why this matters → Who it impacts → What action needs to happen next

The best brands aren’t always the ones with the most information.

They’re the ones that make people care.

What’s one complex idea you’ve had to explain to someone outside your industry AND do you feel that it was communicated effectively?

For a long time, we were taught to separate personality from professionalism.

Be serious.
Be polished.
Don’t stand out too much.

But here’s what I’ve learned: The people who make the biggest impact are usually the ones who bring something different to the table.

Your perspective.
Your experiences.
Your way of solving problems.

Those things aren’t distractions from your expertise.

They’re part of it.

Especially when you’re working with complex ideas, technical information, or serious industries.

People don’t connect with information alone. They connect with the people behind it.

Professional doesn’t have to mean personality-free.

What’s one thing about yourself that you used to hide but now see as a strength?

I never really fit the government mold.

And for a long time, I wondered if that was a problem.

I worked in spaces where professionalism was expected. Where precision mattered. Where every detail had a purpose.

And I loved that.

But I also brought my own style with me. The creativity. The colors. The personality. The belief that even the most serious topics deserve to be communicated in a way that connects with people.

I’ve designed presentations for senior DoD leaders, created communications for complex programs, and helped organizations tell stories that matter.

But I never believed the answer was to remove the human element. The best work happens when strategy and personality meet.

You don’t have to become less of yourself to be taken seriously.

Sometimes the thing that makes you different is exactly what makes you valuable. 🌱

Have you ever felt like you didn’t quite fit the traditional mold in your industry?

Government doesn't have to be boring.

There. I said it. 😂

For years, I’ve worked with organizations doing incredibly important work.

Innovation.
Research.
Technology.
National security.
Mission-critical programs.

But sometimes the communication doesn’t match the importance of the work.

A great idea can get lost behind:

❌ Endless bullet points
❌ Generic templates
❌ Technical language nobody outside the room understands

The challenge isn’t making something “flashy.”

The challenge is making something clear.

Professional enough for the boardroom.

Human enough to be remembered.

Because the people making decisions are still people.

They connect with stories.
They remember visuals.
They engage with ideas they understand.

The government space is full of incredible stories.

Sometimes they just need someone to help tell them.

This is my "yes" year.

Not because saying "yes" is easy.

Actually… quite the opposite.

Saying yes means stepping into things that are uncomfortable.

It means taking risks.

It means trusting the skills, experiences, and lessons that brought you here.

This year, I said yes to:

🌱 Building Mustard Seed Marketing
🎨 Bringing creativity into spaces where it’s not always expected
🏛 Helping organizations communicate complex ideas clearly

And most importantly...
💡 Showing up as myself—even when I don’t fit the traditional mold

For a long time, I thought I had to choose:

Professional OR creative.

Strategic OR fun.

Corporate OR authentic.

But I’ve learned the best work happens when you bring all of yourself to the table.

So here’s to saying yes.

Yes to growth.

Yes to creativity.

Yes to new opportunities.
